Did you know Lenexa’s Parks and Recreation Board is responsible for recommending names for new parks? Undeveloped park property on the east side of Monticello south of 83rd Street was known as “80-acre Park” until the name Black Hoof Park was recommended by park board and accepted by city council. Did you know Freedom Fields was not the first name considered by Park Board? After discussion at our monthly meeting, we wisely delayed our final decision until the next meeting, just to see if other names came to mind. A thoughtful staff member suggested Freedom Fields, in part because she felt children, especially the young ones, should enjoy the “freedom” of outdoor play.
