Craig Denny earned BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Iowa State and then began his engineering career with Terracon. In 1985, Craig and his family moved to Lenexa. Craig recently retired from Terracon as Senior Principal and Senior Engineering Consultant after a 47-year career.
Not content with sitting idle in retirement, Craig recently filed as candidate for the Ward 4 position on the Lenexa City Council after Mandy Stuke announced she would not stand for reelection in November 2021.
“I look forward to continuing to serve the City of Lenexa and its residents.”
Craig began his volunteer involvement through his daughter’s activities (PTA, Band Aides, Girls Scouts, Lenexa Lazers Swim Team, Johnson County Swim & Dive, etc.). In 1994, Craig was inducted into the Lenexa Volunteer Hall of Fame, but that was only the beginning of his volunteer service to Lenexa and the surrounding community.
Craig was appointed to Lenexa’s Park and Recreation Board by Mayor Joan Bowman in 1994 and has served Lenexa continuously for over 27 years. He served as chairman of this board 10 times.
In 1997, Craig was elected to the Shawnee Mission Board of Education. He was re-elected 4 more times, ending his board service in 2017. During his 20+ years on this board, he was elected President 5 times and Vice president 3 times.
Inspired by a former college professor, Craig enrolled at KU in 1991 to pursue another degree in civil engineering. While working full time and serving on the board of education, he completed his dissertation and earned his PhD in 1999.
In 2005, Mayor Mike Boehm asked Craig to lead a group of volunteers to plan events celebrating Lenexa’s 100th Anniversary. The community-wide, week-long celebration in May 2007 included a talent show, street fair, old time field games for adults and children and a carnival in the Community Center parking lot.
In 2007, Mayor Boehm again asked Craig to help his community. Craig, with co-chair, Mandy Stuke (current Lakeview Board member and Ward 4 City Council member), lead Lenexa’s Vision 2030, a 2-year long process to provide community input to Lenexa’s future.
Craig has been an active member of the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce since 1990. He was elected Chamber Chairman in 2008.
Craig was a member of the Lakeview Village Board of Directors from 2008 to 2016 and from 2017 to early 2020 when he became a Lakeview resident. “This board service has been the highlight of my volunteer career”.
Craig served on the Iowa State University Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2012 to 2017. He currently serves on the Iowa State University Foundation Board of Directors. In 2016, he received The Order of the Knoll-Cardinal and Gold Award from ISUF. In 2019, he received the Alumni Medal from ISUAA.
Craig is a US Army veteran, a member of the Lenexa Rotary Club, Lenexa Historical Society, American Society of Civil Engineers, Academy of Geo-Professionals, and Lenexa Economic Development Council and several other local and national organizations. He has received many honors and awards for his professional work, community service and philanthropy.
Craig recently retired from Terracon as Senior Principal and Senior Engineering Consultant after a 47-year career. At Terracon, Craig served on their Board of directors for 27 years and then as Chair of the Terracon Foundation Board.
