Why I like Lenexa…Did you know the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce is housed in the historic Lackman house? Did you know the Wes Fry restarted the Lenexa Chamber in 1950? In his honor, the Chamber named the lane in front of the house for Wes. I was proud to have a hand in that recognition and prouder still to serve as Chamber Board Chair some years ago.
Did you know Lenexa’s Parks and Recreation Board is responsible for recommending names for new parks? Undeveloped park property on the east side of Monticello south of 83rd Street was known as “80-acre Park” until the name Black Hoof Park was recommended by park board and accepted by city council. Did you know Freedom Fields was not the first name considered by Park Board? After discussion at our monthly meeting, we wisely delayed our final decision until the next meeting, just to see if other names came to mind. A thoughtful staff member suggested Freedom Fields, in part because she felt children, especially the young ones, should enjoy the “freedom” of outdoor play.
Loved getting out and enjoying the Lenexa Spinach Festival and getting to check out our new honeysuckle removal crew—the goats! If you are out and about you should check out the work they’re doing at Sar Ko Park—but no petting, these goats are professional plant-eaters as part of Lenexa’s partnership with Goats on the Go. https://www.lenexa.com/…/goats_are_grazing_at_sar-ko…
Our many smaller neighborhood parks. In Ward 4 alone, there’s Green Prairie, Scouting, Trafalgar, Mullen, Kickapoo, Flat Rock Creek and Bradshaw Parks. Did you know Bradshaw Park in Old Town Lenexa was named for the Bradshaw family? Squire Charles A. Bradshaw, who owned 160 acres in the area, sold railroad right-of-way on the condition that the railroad would maintain a depot on the land so trains would stop thus creating more business. Bradshaw sold 41.5 acres abutting the railroad to Octave Chanute, a civil engineer, who platted the original town of Lenexa in 1869.
A heartfelt thank you to all who voted in this primary election and to those who entrusted me with your vote. We did it. We won the primary and we move on to the general election! Our work is far from over and I am excited for the opportunity to share more of why I LIKE LENEXA and to hear from YOU and what YOU LIKE about Lenexa but more importantly your concerns. I look forward to earning your vote in the general election but for now we take a break—or at least our signs do! That’s right—the signs must come out of our yards and go into hibernation until September 18th—45 days out from the general election—and at that time you can place them back in your yard. Thank you again for your support, I couldn’t have made it through the primary without you all! Now let’s finish this in November!
